I'd like to start out by saying, if I could give them negative stars I would. My husband and I ordered online and paid for it online and went to pick it up and was ignored at the window. We attempted to go to the other window... See More where customers were getting served and they made us go back to the other window just to sit there for 20 mintues while we were still ignored and they helped other people who weren't even there before us at all. After sitting for that amount of time I knocked on the window and someone from the back, not even the guy up front who was ignoring us, came to see what we needed and then got us our cold food that had been sitting there. I also had a slushie which took another 5 minthes for some reason. My husband watched them grab a cup from a location we hadn't seen them grab a cup from this whole time sitting there just for my slushie. The food was terribly cold and terrible. I didn't drink the slushie and set it by my sink. And when we came to it this morning, there is black stuff all in it. They literally tried to poison me with whatever it was in the cup. I honestly cannot beleive that a person who works in a restaurant would do this to a paying customer. I did nothing wrong. And even if I did, there is no reason to try and poison someone. I worked in food for 16 years. I have had some of the worst people and never in my life have I ever tried to ruin or poison someone's food. This is unacceptable and horrendous. As a human who did this to someone, you should be ashamed of yourself. I'm so upset that someone would even do this to anyone and you do not deserve the right to make food for people. This entire location should be ashamed. | Symptoms: Other See Less

Diarrhea, Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Chills

Early evening Saturday May 26, 2018. Ordered 2 baconzillas and one order of seasoned fries. Nephew ate one sandwich and didn’t get sick so think it was ok. I ate the fries with mine. Went to bed around 11:30; which is early for me, feeling a little... See More nauseous. Woke up early with diarrhea. Over the next 24 hours had severe diarrhea and several bouts of vomiting. Some fever and chills. Was able to keep hydrated but unable to even think of food until late this afternoon (Monday) when I ate a cup of soup. | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Fever, Nausea, Vomiting, Chills See Less

We are frequent shoppers of this place and have noticed flagrant potential health problems for many years.

1. Fish odors constantly wreak from the seafood department. We go to other Whole Foods as well as many other establishments that offer seafood products and in no other place... See More do we experience an odor of this sort. The odor is constant no matter when you shop.
2. We noticed a sewer-like smell near the coffee bar. There appears to be an exposed drain. Drain pipes from two sinks appear to be open-ended and feed a grate which I would think goes to a sewer drain. See the photos below. (One photo zooms in on the drain setup; the second (which is a bit blurry) backs off and shows the two sinks that feed the pipes.
3. There is a similar sewer-like smell by the left side of the meet department with a similar setup as in item 2 and an exposed drain.

I would suggest that the Monmouth County health commission perform an inspection of the Middletown Whole Foods.

Fish odors are usually the result of a breakdown of proteins. The odorant is trimethlamine. The warmer the temperature of the stored fish the faster it is produced. The reason is that a lot of fish markets (the stupid ones) store the fish directly on an ice bed. The problem is that cold goes down (and heat goes up) therefore the exposed/top side of the fish can be at almost room temperature and unless the help are flipping the fish over every hour or so, bad, smelly things will happen. Most “fresh” fish are anything but fresh. Want fresh fish? Buy frozen fish because in most cases, it is caught, processed and flash frozen within an hour right on a giant factory ship. Unlike when it was frozen years ago the methodology used today freezes it so quickly it retains its integrity when thawed properly. Or only buy it from a fish market that has a dock behind it where the fishing boats bring it directly, or a fish market that uses proper cold-hold cases. Those are the ones they keep meat an chicken in.

Thank you for explaining what causes the fishy odors and what to buy if we want fresh fish. We're fortunate that we can buy it directly off the dock several times a year.

The FDA released a warning letter for The Royal Ice Cream Company Inc. located at 27 Warren St., Manchester, CT 06040-6534 on July 28, 2022.

During the inspection from January 19 through February 22, 2022, FDA investigators found serious violations of the Current Good Manufacturing Practice, Hazard... See More Analysis, and Risk-Based Preventive Controls for Human Food regulation (CGMP & PC rule). FDA collected environmental samples (i.e., swabs) from various areas in this processing facility. FDA laboratory analysis of the environmental swabs found the presence of Listeria monocytogenes (L. monocytogenes), a human pathogen, in this facility. FDA have determined that the RTE ice cream products manufactured in this facility were prepared, packed or held under insanitary conditions whereby they may have been rendered injurious to health.

The serious deviations found at the facility are:

- Hazard Analysis and Risk-Based Preventive Controls:
1- This facility manufactures ice cream products, RTE foods that are exposed to the environment prior to packaging, where they may be contaminated with environmental pathogens such as L. monocytogenes. The packaged ice cream products do not receive a lethal treatment or otherwise include a control measure (such as a formulation lethal to the pathogen) that would significantly minimize the pathogen. The detection of L. monocytogenes in finished products and reoccurring presence of L. monocytogenes in this facility are significant in that they demonstrate their sanitation procedures have been inadequate to effectively control pathogens in this facility to prevent contamination of food. Appropriate control of L. monocytogenes in a food processing environment requires knowledge of the unique characteristics of the organism and implementing the hygienic practices necessary to control this pathogen. Once L. monocytogenes is established in a production area, personnel or equipment can facilitate the pathogen’s movement and contamination of food-contact surfaces and finished product. It is essential to identify the areas of the food processing plant where this organism is able to survive, and to take such corrective actions as necessary to eradicate the organism by rendering these areas unable to support the survival and growth of the organism and prevent the organism from being re-established in such sites. Additionally, FDA has repeatedly detected Listeria innocua (L. innocua), a non-pathogenic Listeria species, in environmental samples collected from this firm during FDA inspections conducted in 2022, 2020, 2018, and 2017. The presence of Listeria species such as L. innocua suggests that conditions also are suitable for survival and/or growth of L. monocytogenes. Furthermore, in reviewing this facility’s environmental monitoring program, they have repeatedly found L. monocytogenes and Listeria spp. through their own testing from April 30, 2021, through January 19, 2022, from their RTE ice cream processing environment. During a regulatory meeting held with this firm on March 31, 2021, FDA communicated their concerns regarding operations of this firm, including deficiencies within their written food safety plan and environmental monitoring program.
2.- The sanitation controls did not ensure that this facility is maintained in a sanitary condition adequate to significantly minimize or prevent hazards such as environmental pathogens and biological hazards due to employee handling.
3.- They did not establish and implement adequate written verification procedures for environmental monitoring.

- Supply-Chain Program: Their written supply-chain program does not provide assurance that a hazard requiring a supply-chain-applied control has been significantly minimized or prevented.

- Current Good Manufacturing Practice:
1.- They did not conduct all food manufacturing, processing, packing, and holding under such conditions and controls as are necessary to minimize the potential for contamination of food.
2.- Their equipment and utensils were not designed and were not of such material and workmanship as to be adequately cleanable and were not maintained to protect against contamination

About FDA Warning letters: "When FDA finds that a manufacturer has significantly violated FDA regulations, FDA notifies the manufacturer. This notification is often in the form of a Warning Letter. The Warning Letter identifies the violation, such as poor manufacturing practices, problems with claims for what a product can do, or incorrect directions for use. The letter also makes clear that the company must correct the problem and provides directions and a timeframe for the company to inform the FDA of its plans for correction."
