Campylobacter is a common cause of food poisoning. The bacteria often exist in raw chicken, raw milk, raw beef, and contaminated water. Symptoms of a campylobacter infection may emerge as soon as 24 hours after ingestionand commonly include diarrhea, stomach pain, fever, vomiting, and bloating.

Last updated: August 17, 2023

Diagnosis: Campylobacter

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) and the Southeast Kansas Multi-County Health Department (SEKMCHD) are investigating a potential outbreak of campylobacteriosis possibly linked to the Trade Winds Bar and Grill in Garnett, Kansas. The outbreak, under preliminary investigation, has affected various individuals who visited the... See More establishment between July 14 and August 9, 2023. Customers who experienced symptoms such as diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting post the visit are urged to participate in a survey conducted by KDHE to assist with the investigation.

Campylobacteriosis, commonly referred to as Campylobacter infection, is a disease caused by Campylobacter bacteria. The infection typically occurs due to the consumption of raw or undercooked poultry or foods contaminated by the bacteria. Person-to-person transmission, although rare, can occur if an infected individual fails to practice proper hygiene.

The symptoms, which comprise diarrhea (often bloody), fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps, appear within two to five days following exposure. While most individuals recover without specific treatment, one out of every 1,000 reported cases of Campylobacter infection can lead to a condition known as Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS). GBS can cause muscle weakness and sometimes paralysis, requiring medical care. The majority of patients, however, fully recover.

The KDHE and SEKMCHD, in coordination with the Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA), are committing efforts towards ensuring proper food safety practices at the concerned restaurant. As part of the response, the KDA conducted an inspection of the establishment on August 15 and prescribed compliance advice accordingly. As the investigation continues, affected individuals are reminded.

In case you experienced Campylobacter symptoms, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

See More going on was the chicken wasn’t cooked all the way, so I end up getting chills fevers are the next day I end up in the hospital at 3:30 AM with lots of pain, fever, nauseous, and diarrhea eventually turned into bloody diarrhea. I was admitted into the hospital for three days with a fever of 104 for two days , my colon was inflamed, and my intestines had caught a bacteria from eating the sandwich that had a chicken that wasn’t fully cooked I was released from the hospital with anabiotic’s, and with bloody diarrhea and pain in my stomach doctor said eventually it would go away but for the time being, I can’t return to work until the diarrhea is gone that has put me in a big burden. The New York State Agriculture Commission alerted consumers in Orange County and the surrounding area not to consume unpasteurized raw milk from Freedom Hill Farm LLC located at 115 Grange Road, Otisville, New York 10963 due to possible Campylobacter jejuni contamination. To date, no illnesses have been... See More reported to the Department associated with this product.

A routine sample of the milk collected by an inspector from the Department was discovered to be contaminated with Campylobacter jejuni. On July 13, 2023, the farm was notified of a preliminary positive test result. Further laboratory testing, completed on July 19, 2023, confirmed the presence of Campylobacter jejuni in the raw milk sample. The farm is now prohibited from selling raw milk until subsequent sampling indicates that the product is free of this harmful bacteria.

The Department recommends that any consumers who purchased raw milk from Freedom Hill Farm LLC immediately dispose of it.

It is important to note that raw milk does not provide the protection of pasteurization. Pasteurization is a process that heats milk to a specific temperature for a specific amount of time. Pasteurization kills the bacteria responsible for numerous illnesses and diseases such as listeriosis, salmonellosis, campylobacteriosis, typhoid fever, tuberculosis, diphtheria, and brucellosis. Pasteurization of milk is recognized internationally as an effective means of preventing outbreaks of foodborne illnesses.
