Local, state, and federal (CDC, FDA) public health authorities investigated multiple potential clusters of cyclosporiasis cases during 2023, with onset on or after April 1, 2023. As of October 24, 2023, 41 jurisdictions, including 40 states and New York City, have reported a total of 2,272 laboratory-confirmed … See More
cases of cyclosporiasis. 186 have been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. These individuals had not traveled outside of the United States during the 14 days before they got sick. No specific food items have been identified as the source of most of these illnesses.

As it currently stands, the actual count of people infected with cyclosporiasis may be higher than reported, due to some individuals potentially recovering without seeking medical attention or being tested for Cyclospora. Cyclosporiasis, caused by the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis, causes diarrhea, loss of appetite, and cramping. Cyclosporiasis cases are reported year-round in the United States, with increases in case counts seen during the spring and summer months.

In case you are experiencing Cyclospora symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is reporting an increase in cases of the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite in individuals returning from Mexico. To date, 74 people in England, Wales and Scotland have reported falling ill from the infection. During the period of 12 May to 14 August … See More
2023, both men and women were affected, with women comprising 52 percent of the cases. The median age of those affected was 44 years. Of the individuals who provided travel details, the majority revealed they stayed in numerous hotels within the Riviera Maya and Cancún regions, and consumed various foods and drinks as part of all-inclusive holiday packages.

It is worth noting that cyclosporiasis outbreaks among UK travelers returning from Mexico have been a recurring issue since 2015, with the exceptions of 2020 and 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the annual incidences of the infection have differed, with 79 cases in 2015, 359 in 2016, 82 in 2017, 61 in 2018, 67 in 2019, and 36 in 2022.

Cyclospora, a protozoan parasite, is spread through the consumption of contaminated food or drink. Symptoms can present as frequent, watery diarrhea, abdominal cramping, bloating, nausea, flatulence, low-grade fever, loss of appetite and weight. While infections are usually mild and self-limiting, complications can arise in immunocompromised individuals, and instances of severe or prolonged infections may necessitate treatment with antibiotics.

As a cautionary measure, visitors to Mexico are urged to practice good food and water hygiene, regardless of the quality of their accommodation. Ideally, they should only consume food that has been freshly prepared, thoroughly cooked, and served piping hot. Some items, like fresh uncooked berries and herbs, unpeeled fruit, and salad items, are best avoided due to the difficulty in sterilizing them effectively.

Cyclospora is a non-life-threatening gastrointestinal illness caused by an intestinal parasite. People can become infected by consuming contaminated food or water. In Texas, increased cases of Cyclosporiasis tend to occur seasonally between the months of April and August and symptoms tend to appear between two to 14 days. Cases have been associated with the consumption of fresh produce, including but not limited to fresh cilantro, raspberries, basil, snow peas, and mesclun lettuce.

The health departments advise the following tips to prevent Cyclospora infection:
- Wash your hands with soap and water thoroughly for at least 20 seconds before and after preparing food.
- Wash all fruits and vegetables before eating, cutting, or cooking.
- Wash all cutting boards, utensils, and surfaces to avoid cross-contamination.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) is currently investigating an outbreak of Cyclospora on the Western Slope linked to GNAR Tacos located in Ridgway, CO. As of June 15, there have been 62 cases reported in Colorado since May 1, 2023. These cases have … See More
not resulted in any hospitalizations or deaths. CDPHE is the lead agency on this investigation and is working closely with Ouray County Public Health to identify a possible source of the outbreak.

At this time, public health officials have identified approximately 45 people who are likely associated with the outbreak who dined at the same restaurant, Tacos del GNAR, in Ridgway. People affected reported dining at Tacos del GNAR since May 1, 2023. Cyclospora outbreaks are typically the result of contaminated product — usually produce — in the supply chain rather than a result of food handling and/or cleaning practices at the restaurant. Tacos del GNAR is partnering with CDPHE in all aspects of the investigation. When informed of the outbreak, Tacos del GNAR disposed of and replaced all produce within the facility with different products.

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment is advising people who ate at the restaurant since May 1, 2023, whether they became ill or not, are asked to complete an online survey to help public health with the investigation into the cause of this outbreak.

Cyclospora is spread by people eating or drinking something — such as food or water — that was contaminated with the parasite. Cyclospora is generally not passed directly from one person to another.

The time between eating or drinking Cyclospora and becoming sick is usually about one week, but can be more than two weeks. Cyclospora infects the small intestine and usually causes watery diarrhea, with frequent, sometimes severe, bowel movements. Other common symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps/pain, bloating, increased gas, nausea, fatigue, vomiting, body aches, headache, fever, and other flu-like symptoms. Some people who are infected with Cyclospora do not have any symptoms.
