39 tons of raw turkey recalled because of Salmonella

More than 78,000 pounds of Butterball raw ground turkey was recalled March 13 because it may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. P-7345” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to institutional and retail locations nationwide. Consumers should call (800) 288-8372 with questions.

USDA is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.

Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience food poisoning symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The federal government recall release says the problem was discovered by officials at USDA, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Wisconsin state departments of health services and agriculture, who had been investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections involving five case-patients from two states.  Wisconsin officials collected three intact Butterball brand ground turkey samples from a residence where four of the case-patients live. The case-patients and ground turkey Salmonella isolates are closely related. You can check the full recall notice in the USDA website.

More than 300,000 pounds of Jennie-O raw ground turkey was recalled in late 2018 because of Salmonella contamination. As of February 15,  279 people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported from 41 states and the District of Columbia, with 107 hospitalizations and one death.

“Never order a burger, it will be a charcoal hockey puck, and the bacon tasted rancid. We believe the fried chicken appetizer got us sick. It's the only thing we shared, and I find it hard to believe that the french fries alone could make us this violently ill. I was ok after 12 hours, but my partner was still sick after 24. Service was ok, but was a bit pushy and rude with other parties who simply asked for a different (available) seat.”
