El Abuelito Queso Fresco potentially linked to Listeria monocytogenes
February 17, 2021 11:57 PM
Maryland, United States
The FDA, along with CDC and state and local partners, is investigating an ongoing multistate outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to Hispanic-style fresh and soft cheeses.
As part of this outbreak investigation, the Connecticut Department of Public Health collected product samples of El Abuelito-brand Hispanic-style fresh and soft cheeses from a store where a sick person bought cheeses. Sample analysis showed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in samples of El Abuelito Queso Fresco sold in 10 oz packages, marked as Lot A027 with an expiration date of 02/26/2021. Samples are currently undergoing Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) analysis to determine if the Listeria monocytogenes found in these samples is a match to the outbreak strain. At this time, there is not enough evidence to determine if this outbreak is linked to El Abuelito Queso Fresco.
FDA advises consumers, restaurants, and retailers not to eat, sell, or serve El Abuelito Queso Fresco cheese until more information is known. FDA and state partners are working with the firm to recall the affected lot and to determine if additional products should be recalled. Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.
As of February 17, 2021, there are reports of seven people infected with the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes in Connecticut, Maryland, New York, and Virginia. Six of the seven ill people are Hispanic. Of the four people interviewed, three reported eating at least one type of Hispanic-style fresh and soft cheeses, and all three reported eating queso fresco.

“On May 15th, around 7:30 pm my fiancé ordered me a personal pan pepperoni pizza from there. I had nothing else to eat that night. The next morning, I woke up early with explosive diarrhea (I vomited at the same time) painful stomach cramps, a headache and this went on for the entire day. I was unabl... e to keep anything down, not water, orange juice, crackers, etc. To the point I was pooping liquid every time I drank water or tea. It was absolutely horrible and the pizza wasn’t even that good. I’m pretty sure their crust recipe has changed. Needless to say, I will not be eating at that store, or any, ever again. ”

“I purchased and ate the wicked spicy fajita burrito from the meal deal section there. I read on the label it can be eaten cold or hot despite having rice in it. Later that night I have been violently throwing up every hour or so all through the night into the next day. I have a high temperature so i... t’s clear it’s food poisoning. I believe as I work at a supermarket that the wrap must’ve been out of the cold chain for too long and the rice went bad causing me to have severe food poisoning. I’ve had to call in sick to both my jobs - and will lose out on a great deal of pay. ”

“CDC, public health and regulatory officials in several states, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are collecting different types of data to investigate a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Duisburg infections.
Epidemiologic and traceback data show that Jule’s cashew brie may be conta... minated with Salmonella and may be making people sick.
As of April 21, 2021, five people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Duisburg have been reported from three states (CA, FL, TN). 2 people have been hospitalized and no deaths were reported. Illnesses started on dates ranging from February 1, 2021 to February 27, 2021.
It is possible that more recent illnesses may be reported in the outbreak because there is a period of time between when a person becomes ill and when the illness is reported to public health officials.
State and local public health officials interviewed people about the foods they ate in the week before they got sick. Of the five people interviewed, three (60%) reported eating Jule’s truffle cashew brie – the only common product identified. Two of these people reported eating the cashew truffle brie at the same restaurant on different days.
On April 22, California officials found Salmonella in samples of all varieties of Jule’s cashew brie collected from grocery stores. Investigators are working to confirm if the Salmonella bacteria found in these products is the same bacteria making people sick in this outbreak.
Jule’s Foods recalled all their products on April 22, including:
-Jule’s cashew brie (classic)
-Jule’s truffle cashew brie
-Jule’s black garlic cashew brie
-Jule’s artichoke spinach dip
-Jule’s vegan ranch dressing
CDC advises everyone not to eat, sell, or serve the recalled products. Jule’s Foods has stopped producing and distributing all of their products. Products were for sale online nationwide and in stores in many states.
