Food poisoning and Over The Counter medication. What you need to know.

Food Poisoning and Over The Counter Medication

Food poisoning can be very painful and difficult to endure, and although it can commonly resolve on it's own without treatment, the question often arises, can over the counter (OTC) medications help relieve some symptoms and accelerate recovery.

What Over-the-counter medicine helps with food poisoning?

Over-the-counter medicines may relieve some symptoms of food poisoning. Bismuth subsalicylate (also known as Pepto-Bismol) can treat nausea and diarrhea. Loperamide (also known as Imodium) is an antidiarrheal that stops diarrhea by slowing down the digestive process.

It’s important to know that generally these products are not intended for children. The Food and Drug Administration recommends that if a child is experiencing diarrhea they should stay hydrated, drinking fluids and follow their regular diet, although  additional follow up may be required if symptoms persist.

There are competing opinions on over the counter medications by medical experts. Some say that it may be better to let the illness run its course without stopping nausea and diarrhea  others say over-the-counter medications may speed up the healing process.

Should I seek medical care for food poisoning?

You should seek medical attention from your doctor or healthcare provider if you have symptoms including any of the following:
  • Frequent vomiting that prevents keeping liquids down
  • Signs of dehydration (decreased urination, weakness, feeling dizzy or lightheaded when standing up, or extreme thirst, dry mouth, and throat)
  • High fever (temperature over 101.5°F, measured orally)
  • Diarrhea lasting for more than 3 days
  • Bloody stools
  • Neurological symptoms (blurry vision, muscle weakness, and tingling in the arms)
