About Norovirus

Norovirus infection usually begins with diarrhea and vomiting that are often mistaken for flu, and hence the infection being termed the stomach flu. Norovirus infection can become severe without prompt medical attention. The highly contagious virus can be spread via food, water, contaminated surfaces, and close contact with infected persons. Thus, if you touch your mouth after coming in contact with a contaminated surface, or eat foods already contaminated by the virus, you might get infected. 

The virus is considered the leading cause of food-borne illness in the United States and may be unintentionally transmitted by food workers to prepared food. Seafood such as oysters may also carry the virus.

Norovirus Symptoms

The condition can be very discomforting. People infected with norovirus may start experiencing symptoms within 48hrs of infection. These may last a further 48 – 72hrs. Norovirus infection may be symptomized by:

The Long Beach Health Department is investigating a norovirus outbreak at Carver Elementary School located at 5335 E Pavo St, Long Beach, CA. On March 16, The Long Beach Health and Human Services Department directed the LBUSD administration to close all school and childcare operations at Carver from Friday, March 17 through Tuesday, March 21. School will reopen on Wednesday, March 22. Health officials have determined that this length of closure is the most effective way to stop the further spread of this common virus.

Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

Busy day, it was the ONLY thing I ate that day.

4:45PM I ordered a Wopper, I was in a hurry so I ate it fast. It did seem kind of "off".

7:30PM started feeling quite nauseous, stomach was very uncomfortable.

9PM Vomiting started
