Increased Verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) cases in the Ireland Midwest Region

Public health authorities are investigating an increase of cases of a potentially-deadly bacteria Verotoxigenic E. coli (VTEC) in the midwest region. According to the news, multidisciplinary public health teams have managed and investigated outbreaks and cases in households and in rural settings, particularly on or near farms, and sites with access to a private well supply, and sources of infection are under investigation.

The VTEC strain produces a powerful toxin that can cause severe illness, particularly in children under five and the elderly. The infection can be passed from person to person, through consuming contaminated food or water or contact with infected animals or contamination in the environment. In addition to causing severe stomach pains and diarrhea, VTEC can cause a serious condition known as Haemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), which results in the breakdown of red blood cells and kidney failure. A small number of HUS cases have been confirmed.

In case you are experiencing E. coli symptoms such as watery diarrhea (often bloody), vomiting, stomach cramps, and mild fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.

didn't want anything. I sipped the milkshake and it tasted funny. I opened the cap and my chocolate milk shake was whiteish not the brown color and was suppose to be and even weirder it tasted like strawberry. I told my mom to close her eyes and o then asked her what she thought it tasted like and she said a strawberry shake. My mother took a secound sip when she opened her eyes and I told her it was supposed to be chocolate. Her and I decided not to take another sip my brothers however drank the whole thing. When we got home my brothers started vomiting everywhere (not a gun clean up) not even an hour later my mom vomited and some time later I did. We stood up the whole night fighting for the toilet now my father was fine and he was the only one who did no ingest the shake. I started experiencing intestinal cramps. Then, when we got back to the hotel, the nausea started. That's when my spouse told me she had been feeling ill as well. She was the first to vomit and I followed there after. We struggled to finish packing for the morning flight. We only had fluids in the form of water and apple juice for the entire journey. She only experienced nausea, intestinal cramps and vomiting. I on the other hand had all the symptoms including chills, nausea, intestinal cramps, vomiting, fever and diarrhea.
