La Marqueta, Ashford Avenue, San Juan, Puerto Rico

Report Type: Food Poisoning
Symptoms: Diarrhea Nausea Vomiting Gas
“I believe it was a burrito there. My wife and I shared a meal for lunch and drank from the same water source. Then for dinner around 6 p.m. we ate Mexican food there. We shared chips and guacamole, and even shared a cocktail. But I got a carnitas burrito... See More and she got something else with chicken. At 10;30 I was very tired and went to bed. But I couldn't fall asleep. I laid there until midnight when I felt like I needed to pass a bowel movement. Once I stood up I noticedy stomach was also upset. I went to the toilet and at first everything seemed regular, but then my bowels just became diarrheal, and I remained on the toilet with a sludge like stool coming out for at least a half hour. Maybe 45 minutes. Then as soon as I stood up I had a gag reflex and bent over the toilet and heaved a very small amount vomit. I heaved a few more times with only a little coming out and figured I should drink some water to make it easier to come out. I did that and vomited a couple times with a lot of food coming up undigested. I sat there for another half hour and vomited maybe two more times before I started feeling very faint and went to alert my wife before I passed out. As soon as I got to her and said her name I vomited a huge amount all over the floor, and then about three more times before I made it back to the bathroom. I drank some more water and felt like I would pass out again before vomiting two more times. Then it felt like it had passed, and I went to bed. But I've still just been laying here restlessly without being able to fall asleep. But I just took a sip of water and it feels normal. I have passed gas a couple times without worrying about diarrhea, and I don't feel like vomiting anymore. For now at least.

San Juan, Puerto Rico

Report Type: Food Poisoning
Symptoms: Diarrhea Nausea Vomiting
“From a food court , Hamburger or fried chicken, not too sure. 1 person. My son who ate the food.
For the hamburger a friend brought it. Do not know yet, as my son started the symptoms during the night
Given the circumstances and onset of the symptoms, I am... See More now more convinced that the causal food is the Fried chicken rather than the hamburger (purchased yesterday and eaten less than an 1 hour before the first food poisoning symptom appears). And I suspect more the post-purchase handling of the food. Indeed the fried chicken was bought on Wednesday at KFC in Plazza Americas, San Juan. The issue is that my son kept the rest until Thursday midday, but had not preserve it in the fridge. He reheated it yesterday at 3pm to then eat it with his friend of 14 years.

The 1st symptom (nausea) started at around 8.30pm, i.e. 25-30 minutes after eating the hamburger we bought yesterday...so, for me, it was just a simple coincidence regarding the hamburger). The serious vomiting and diarrhea occurred at around 11/11.30pm , almost midnight. Although he ate the same food (reheated fried chicken at 3pm, then hamburger at 8.30pm) with the friend, the latter did not have any single symptom. My son appeared therefore to have been more sensitive to the causal microbiological agent or may be he ate more chicken pieces than his friend.

I hope that this is useful. I am not certain 100% that KFC is to be blamed.

SPIN! Pizza, 4950 Main St, Kansas City, MO, USA

Report Type: Food Poisoning
Symptoms: Other
Mushroom pizza To start I’m not for sure it was the pizza. Here’s my story: I ate 3 pieces of mushroom pizza on Saturday afternoon, on Sunday I felt ok, on Monday morning when everything changed, I when I woke up and opened my eyes my vision was totally distorted... See More and my head was swimming. My vision was like my eyes were rapidly moving back and forth. This went on for about 30 seconds. I was terrified. I thought this was a stroke or something worse. Once that stopped and I could see normal I took a deep breath, and tried to calm down. My head was still swimming, but not as bad. I had Monday off(president’s day 2020) and as soon as I could I went to the dr. Everything checked out fine, blood pressure, heart, ears, etc, plus I had blood work done. All normal. (At this point I did not even think about the this having anywhere to do with the pizza.) The dr did tell me if the eye movements happened again I should see my eye dr. My head continued to have that swimming feeling most of the day. Tuesday night every time I woke up the eye movements happened. At 11:00, 2:30, 4:00, 5:00, and 2 more times where I didn’t open my eyes, but I could feel it. Once that stopped I got up and the swimming feeling stayed with me off and on all day, but wasn’t as intense as Monday. By Tuesday afternoon I went to eye dr, and his summary was it was not my eyes at all, it was in my brain, and said to see a neurologist ASAP. On Tuesday night the swimming seemed to have considerably slowed down, and I was starting to feel normal again. Wednesday night I slept well, with no more eye movements, and I felt almost normal all day! I was so relieved, but I still was going to see a neurologist. I was feeling so good, that I ate 2 more pieces of the mushroom pizza, I froze the leftovers. On Thursday morning my symptoms started all over again! The morning eye movements, the swimming head, it all came back! That’s when I realized that both times I had eaten the pizza. And besides the pizza on Wednesday I had hardly eaten anything, my anxiety has been bad all week and I just wasn’t hungry. So besides the pizza, I had only eaten oatmeal, and some fruit, and crackers. So Friday I’m back to normal again! Two times I ate pizza, two incidents! I’m going to neurologist next Friday, and I’m hoping I have no more incidents, this is Saturday morning and I’m still feeling normal. Was it the Pizza?? Should I have it checked?? Can food do this to your brain, without any other typical food poisoning symptoms?? I want answers, this has been a scary week. BTW I am, and always have been a very healthy person. I’ve never been on any medication, no smoking, drinking, and I’m a 69 yr old female vegetarian

Coronavirus or Food Poisoning? Information about the current COVID-19 outbreak.

Report Type: Outbreak
“There is some confusion surrounding the current Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak that began in December 2019 and whether you can get it through food. Here is some information:

Feb 26 UPDATE: The Chinese CDC is investigating the possibility that the virus can be spread through fecal matter that could possibly... See More contaminate food and water. The Chinese CDC has found live viruses in stool samples of COVID-19 patients and can be a partial explanation for the rapid spread of the disease. The agency is recommending strengthening sanitation and hygiene measures.

What is Coronavirus?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses found in both animals and humans. Past outbreaks include Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The current novel(a new strain that has not been previously identified in humans) Coronavirus strain called 2019-nCoV is thought to originate in live food markets in Wuhan, China through animals and human contact.

How is it transmitted?
Coronaviruses strains are usually transmitted through the respiratory system, so it is typically thought of as a low risk of infection from contaminated food. Restaurants can be a site of transmission of coronavirus because of the large numbers of people congregating in close quarters and then coughing/sneezing could spread the disease just like in other places (transportation, schools, etc). But the food itself normally isn’t a likely vehicle.

The current Coronavirus strains 2019-nCoV has been found in stool samples of COVID-19 patients by the Chinese CDC which means that the current outbreak might be transmitted from multiple routes not just through the respiratory system as usual.

Signs of infection?
Common signs of infection include respiratory symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases and those with weakened immune systems, an infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure, and even death.

Recommendations:
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends standard measures to prevent infection spread include regular hand washing, covering mouth+nose when coughing/sneezing, and avoiding close contact with anyone showing symptoms of respiratory illness such as coughing and sneezing. Additional recommendations from the Chinese CDC include strengthening health publicity and education; maintaining environmental health and personal hygiene; drinking boiled water, avoiding raw food consumption, and implementing separate meal systems in epidemic areas; frequently washing hands and disinfecting of surfaces of objects in households, toilets, public places, and transportation vehicles; and disinfecting the excreta and environment of patients in medical facilities to prevent water and food contamination from patients’ stool samples.
