Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. A complaint of illness was reported to the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD). The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the milk-containing product was distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of milk. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the company's production and packaging processes.

I started to experience stomach cramps on the evening of day 5 (8/23/23) of my 7 day stay after eating at Kyoto- I tasted bad meat during my dinner. The day we were leaving I took an Imodium before getting on the flight. After arriving home, the next few days I have not been able to have normal bowel movements. It was all loose or diarrhea. I called and spoke to my PCP MD who said I have food poisoning and to give it another day or 2 to resolve and take liquid Pepto Bismal. By the evening of 8/30/23 i had severe nausea and stomach cramping and felt like I was going to die. I had severe diarrhea and anything I ate 4 hours ago came out. Went to urgent care and was prescient antibiotics Flagyl, which has helped significantly. Still eating carefully bland foods but this has been horrific. The resort Bavaro Barcelo Palace is dirty, the buffet is not managed properly, is unsafe and they reuse food that has been sitting out at the wrong temperature all day. In addition they probably let their raw meats spoil and or use old meat. One of the cooks at the buffet told my husband to not eat the meat they were cooking because it’s old meat.
