Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause an illness resulting in prolonged gastrointestinal (gut) distress, including watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements that can last for weeks. In severe cases, Cyclospora infection can require hospitalization. Cyclosporiasis is not contagious, and there is no evidence it spreads from person to person.
Public health officials urge anyone with prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms to talk to their healthcare provider.
