Whole Foods Market, New Jersey 35, Red Bank, NJ, USA

We are frequent shoppers of this place and have noticed flagrant potential health problems for many years.

1. Fish odors constantly wreak from the seafood department. We go to other Whole Foods as well as many other establishments that offer seafood products and in no other place … See More
do we experience an odor of this sort. The odor is constant no matter when you shop.
2. We noticed a sewer-like smell near the coffee bar. There appears to be an exposed drain. Drain pipes from two sinks appear to be open-ended and feed a grate which I would think goes to a sewer drain. See the photos below. (One photo zooms in on the drain setup; the second (which is a bit blurry) backs off and shows the two sinks that feed the pipes.
3. There is a similar sewer-like smell by the left side of the meet department with a similar setup as in item 2 and an exposed drain.

I would suggest that the Monmouth County health commission perform an inspection of the Middletown Whole Foods.

Fish odors are usually the result of a breakdown of proteins. The odorant is trimethlamine. The warmer the temperature of the stored fish the faster it is produced. The reason is that a lot of fish markets (the stupid ones) store the fish directly on an ice bed. The problem is that cold goes down (and heat goes up) therefore the exposed/top side of the fish can be at almost room temperature and unless the help are flipping the fish over every hour or so, bad, smelly things will happen. Most “fresh” fish are anything but fresh. Want fresh fish? Buy frozen fish because in most cases, it is caught, processed and flash frozen within an hour right on a giant factory ship. Unlike when it was frozen years ago the methodology used today freezes it so quickly it retains its integrity when thawed properly. Or only buy it from a fish market that has a dock behind it where the fishing boats bring it directly, or a fish market that uses proper cold-hold cases. Those are the ones they keep meat an chicken in.

Thank you for explaining what causes the fishy odors and what to buy if we want fresh fish. We're fortunate that we can buy it directly off the dock several times a year.

Came here on Saturday, December 11th for a dinner party. Was absolutely shocked at the horrendous quality of the food, but most shocking was to receive absolutely RAW pork, a friend of mine ordered the Pork Chops as well as his mother, which came completely uncooked. I … See More
have a picture of it. Myself and my husband ordered the Alfredo & both got violently ill, and began throwing up, and had diarrhea through the next day. This restaurant NEEDS to be inspected, I have read other reviews of food poisoning, but absolutely NO one should have to be subjected to getting this sick when trying to have a nice dinner.  | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting

It may be the grapes on an empty stomach, hadnt ate anything all day, just googled to research about it I already explained in the beginning, i had a couple of grapes and it got me queasy, and fainted, not fun. It happened About 30 minutes ago, i … See More
had about 5 green and red mixed grapes, the strangest thing just happened i felt queasy nauseous, and light headed, i went to get up from my chair and i fainted and fell on the kitchen floor, i managed to get up to my bed layed down for a minute then went to the bathroom and had diarrhea.

The green grapes were the ones i got sick from, the red grapes i purchased about a few days before the green ones, didnt had any side effects from the red, i put together a cheese and grape board to eat as a late snack, i wanted to make sure that they are not poisoned or i give the benefit of the doubt that green grapes on an empty stomach depends on how many, can have some very unpleasant effects.  | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Lightheaded
