At least seventeen people infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella have been reported sick in 4 states. One death has been reported (NY) and 8 people have been hospitalized so far. These cases have been linked to to the consumption of kosher chicken.

The CDC (The Center for Disease Control and Prevention) strongly recommends washing hands before and after handling raw chicken, and not washing raw poultry before cooking. Chicken must be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 165°F to prevent food poisoning. The CDC also advises keeping food preparation areas, utensils and surfaces separated when handling raw chicken products, in order to avoid cross contamination.
The current investigation indicates that several people reported consuming Empire Kosher brand chicken. The outbreak strain was also identified in samples of raw chicken collected from two facilities, one of which processes Empire Kosher brand chicken.
