Lindblad Expeditions' cruise ship, National Geographic Sea Bird, experienced a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its voyage from July 15 to July 20, 2026. The outbreak affected 8 out of 57 passengers and 5 out of 26 crew members, with symptoms including diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The causative agent remains unknown.

The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on July 16, 2026. In response, Lindblad Expeditions implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated affected individuals, and consulted with VSP on sanitation and reporting protocols. Passenger operations were temporarily paused, and VSP provided remote monitoring and public health strategies to prevent further transmission.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported symptoms to the onboard medical center, allowing for quick detection of the outbreak. Despite collecting samples, they were insufficient for testing to determine the causative agent. The VSP continues to monitor gastrointestinal illness outbreaks to ensure public health safety on cruise ships.
