Health officials in Australia are warning people to avoid eating and discard certain poppy seeds following national product recalls. A joint investigation between states and territories and food safety authorities found that the non-food grade poppy seeds have been sold as part of food grade products. Ongoing... investigations indicate the presence of unusually high levels of a naturally occurring chemical (thebaine) in the poppy seeds is likely causing this toxicity.
As of 15/11/22, the Victoria Department of Health reported 11 cases of people reporting unusual and severe symptoms following consumption of home-brewed poppy seed tea. The onset of symptoms has been reported to occur very soon after consumption of the poppy seeds (within minutes to hours). NSW Health reported unusual and severe symptoms following poppy seed consumption have now seen at least 12 people requiring medical attention after developing poisoning soon after ingestion. Additionally, in Western Australia, 2 people suffered severe reactions soon after ingesting large quantities of poppy seeds in poppy seed tea. They have both since recovered.
Clinical presentations include the following symptoms: tachycardia, hypertension, hypertonia, clonus, unsteady gait, diaphoresis (sweating), limb stiffness or jerking, seizures, metabolic acidosis, acute kidney injury, and cardiac arrest.
The investigation is continuing, with ongoing identification of specific brands affected. Given the uncertainties, consumers may wish to avoid consumption of poppy seeds purchased since September 2022, until the investigation has concluded.
As of today, the Food Standards Australia and New Zealand agency (FSANZ) announced several recalls of poppy seeds, including the following products:
- Eumarrah Poppy Seeds by Eumarrah Poppy Seeds by Eumarrah Pty Ltd sold at independent food retailers including IGA & direct from Eumarrah stores in TAS.

Suspected food poisoning. Symptoms: Diarrhea,Stomach Pain
Suspected source: Rojak indian
Onset: Feel nausea
Duration: Few day
Additional information: Please action | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Stomach Pain
Both myself and my boyfriend just had what we believe to be Listeria. We mutually ate one shared meal consisting of eckridge smoked sausage 14oz from Meijer, Indiana 26, Lafayette, IN, canned Kroger brand potatoes, and canned green giant green beans. We ate the meal Monday evening... at around 10pm. Only other thing we shared was a piece of white birthday cake from the Kroger (Payless) bakery, but my daughter had some of it on Saturday with us too and none of us got sick then. On Tuesday morning, however, both my bf and i woke up around 7am with diarrhea and upset stomachs. Symptoms quickly progressed and we’re hitting us both full-force by noon. Severe stomach cramps, debilitating and persistent diarrhea, nausea and vomiting that continued until we were both so dehydrated we couldn’t move or talk. We completely dehydrated ourselves within 5 hours of the symptoms beginning. It took it’s coarse and after about 18-24 hours of sipping very small amounts of pedialyte and taking a concerning amount of prescription zofrans, symptoms began to finally subside. By Friday, by the grace of God, we were back to about 75%, but this took SO MUCH out of us. My bf has an impeccable immune system and can stomach just about anything. I’ve never once seen him get sick with ANYTHING— that is the honest to god truth. And this man was crawling from the toilet back to the bed wailing and begging god to spare him this pain. All while I was watching from the couch, hysterical but unable to help because I myself was unable to push through the stomach pain nor did I have to energy to do anything other than sob and try to call someone to come help us. This was one of the worst thing that has happened to me, medically speaking. I think it’s safe to say it was DEFINITELY the worst thing my boyfriend has ever experienced.Post stamp: DATE ON THE SAUSAGE WAS 1/23/23. Purchased 10/26/22 from Meijer Lafayette Indiana.
11/16 update: We were feeling significantly better about 36 hours after the symptoms began. Then it was just regaining out strengths & appetites and re-hydrating ourselves. It was extremely tough on our bodies… and I’m not a super “healthy” person by any means. Actually, I’m considered “medically frail”. So definitely a hard thing to go through. | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Cramps, Stomach Pain, Other
On Oct. 28th, 2022 my husband and I decided to order takeout from this restaurant whose food we enjoyed about 2 1/2 years ago. Order a small mix of items since I like to taste a variety, he only wanted the chicken Tikka Masala. I started tasting... their Spinach Saag (I've eaten Indian food at top NYC restaurants, and one bit of whatever this burnt mess was, it WAS NOT Spinach Saag Paneer. I moved on to a bite of their Chicken Korma, that tasted awful & told my husband the restaurant might have the same name but it was NOT the place we'd ordered from 2-plus years prior. Then I got SICK to say the least, and have spent 98% of my life in the bathroom. This has been around the clock, and I still feel nauseous. I decided to go on-line for reviews and most of them were exactly like mine; interestingly people said "this place totally changed when they changed management 2 years ago". Well that explains a lot. Meanwhile, my husband called & told them how sick I got after eating some of their food. I guess he spoke with the owner who promised to refund his credit card. Husband checked today and card was charged, Discover card said there was no sign of a pending refund. Husband called the restaurant to remind of the day & time he ordered and amount spent. Man yelled "I'LL CALL YOU BACK" and slammed the phone in his ear, and no, he didn't call back. OMG, don't even THINK of eating at this wretched place!!!! | Symptoms: Nausea, Diarrhea, Vomiting
