On 9/1/22, I had been so busy cleaning and prepping my house for family coming to stay for my son’s upcoming 2nd birthday, that I hadn’t eaten anything besides a bit of plain yogurt & a half of a banana in the morning. It was approaching 1:30... See More pm, so I drove straight to this location drive thru to get my usual favorite: the sausage, cheddar & egg breakfast sandwich! About 40 mins. after eating the breakfast sandwich, I went into Home Goods, nearby, & was shopping for my son’s 2nd birthday gifts and home decor, when very suddenly I had severe abdominal cramping, & the need to use the toilet immediately!! I broke out in a sweat as I tried to walk it off, but the urge to run to the bathroom was too strong to resist. The pain was horrible! I never have had any digestive issues before, & since I hadn’t eaten much of anything that day, I knew right away that it was the this sandwich. I stayed in the bathroom on that toilet for a couple of hours. It was super strange, and even suspicious to the people & staff who waited and waited for me to come out and free up the only other toilet, but I never did… until I got it all out of me, I assumed… so I finally felt ok enough to try to walk back to my car, but once I left the bathroom I had a second intestinal attack, so I rushed back again. I had the full sweats again, the growling rumbling explosive sounds to go along with the diarrhea & painful cramping and twisting in my intestines. Lovely! That’s when I texted my partner that I had been food poisoned and that I’d be home asap, but not right away. I wear supposed to be out in Carmel valley already to pick up my daughter from school and to care for my toddler. The episode in the bathroom persisted until around 5:00 pm. (Several hours total) Then back at home, it continued for a day or 2 more. Now, 2.5 weeks later, I am having mucus in my stool, and other alarming symptoms. What the heck type of bacteria was that?! Yikes! | Symptoms: Diarrhea, Nausea, Other See Less

The FDA is currently investigating an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes. As of September 14, 2022, a total of 6 people infected with Listeria monocytogenes have been reported. No specific product has been linked to this investigation as of today. This investigation is ongoing.

According to CDC, Listeriosis... See More is a serious infection usually caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes, and Listeria outbreaks are often linked to dairy products and produce. This illness is most likely to sicken pregnant women and their newborns, adults aged 65 or older, and people with weakened immune systems. Other people can be infected with Listeria, but they rarely become seriously ill.

Some CDC recommendations to prevent Listeriosis:

    - Do not eat raw or lightly cooked sprouts of any kind (including alfalfa, clover, radish, and mung bean sprouts).
    - Don’t let juice from hot dog and lunch meat packages get on other foods, utensils, and food preparation surfaces. For people at higher risk avoid eating hot dogs, lunch meats, cold cuts, other deli meats, or fermented or dry sausages unless they are heated to an internal temperature of 165°F or until steaming hot just before serving. Wash hands after handling hot dogs, lunch meats, and deli meats
    - Only consume pasteurized milk and milk products, including soft cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. Look for the word “pasteurized” on the label. If in doubt, don’t buy it!
    - Eat cut melon right away or refrigerate it. Throw away cut melons left at room temperature for more than 4 hours.

In case you are experiencing listeria monocytogenes symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
