I tested positive last week for the Cyclospora parasite. We were at Planet Hollywood’s sister hotel, the Marriott Resort, also all inclusive. We got back July 1 after being there for six days and had no idea what was wrong with me. I was in and out of the urgent care for weeks. They tested me for bacterial, viral, and parasites however, Cyclospora is not one of the common parasites they test for. If it wasn’t for articles that I found coming from the UK, I would not have been able to diagnose myself. My symptoms matched exactly to what everyone was going through. Luckily, my doctor took my word for it and started me on Bactrim (a second antibiotic) and added the specific lab test that could detect it. Sure enough, the CDC called me saying that I tested positive. It was the worst illness of my life. What’s frustrating to me is that the hotel told me that they’re not hearing about anybody else coming down with this parasite. Either they’re lying or it’s because the United States does not usually test it in their labs and everyone chalks it up to be Montezuma‘s revenge. Has anyone stayed at the Marriott all inclusive resort and gotten this? I am sure that they get their food from the same trucks.
