Holland America Line's Koningsdam cruise has reported a Norovirus outbreak, affecting 98 passengers and 12 crew members during its voyage from February 17 to March 24, 2024.

The Koningsdam, on its 286th voyage, carried 2,522 passengers and 961 crew members. The affected individuals, representing 3.89% of passengers... See More and 1.25% of the crew, reported predominant symptoms of diarrhea and vomiting, consistent with the Norovirus infection. The cruise traveled through various locations, but the specific areas where the outbreak occurred have not been disclosed.

The outbreak was discovered when the number of gastrointestinal illness cases aboard the ship began to rise significantly. In response, Holland America Line increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as per the ship’s outbreak prevention and response plan. Stool specimens were collected from the ill for testing, and those affected were isolated to prevent further spread of the virus. The Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) is remotely monitoring the situation, including a review of the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.
