Chemical contamination can be within minutes, but there are other pathogens in which the onset of symptoms is not immediate and can show up later (e.g. Campylobacter - 2 to 5 days; E. coli - 1 to 8 days; Vibrio - 1 to 7 days).
TIP: Norivirus is one of the most common foodborne illnesses, it can be transmitted via food, then the person who gets it is highly contagious and can in fact pass it on to family members co-workers etc.
