So many foods have additives used for thickening such as carrageenan that in many people cause explosive diarrhea. Also the use of chicory root, also known as inulin, as a fiber can cause days worth of abdominal pain, gas, cramping and diarrhea. Both these additives are deemed "safe" by the FDA and are found in lots of foods we eat everyday.
