The CFIA announced the recall of Red onions imported from the USA by Sysco because of possible Salmonella contamination. This recall was triggered by findings by the CFIA during its investigation into a foodborne illness outbreak. This food safety investigation is ongoing, which may lead to the recall of other products.There have been 55 additional illnesses in Canada since the outbreak was first announced for a total of 114 cases of salmonella across five provinces. Sixteen people have been hospitalized. No one has died.
CFIA advises consumers not to consume the recalled products and to return them to the place of purchase instead. Sysco is recalling red onions in Western Canada through the following Sysco locations: Victoria, Vancouver, Kelowna, Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, and Regina.
