A norovirus outbreak has affected dozens of hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail near Wrightwood, California. The outbreak, which began earlier this month, has resulted in at least two dozen reported illnesses, with seven cases confirmed by medical professionals. The trail is a popular 2,650-mile route stretching from Mexico to Canada.The outbreak has led to significant health concerns, including at least one air rescue for a hiker who became too ill to continue. Symptoms reported by hikers include severe weakness, vomiting, and diarrhea. The source of the outbreak is suspected to be a shared water cache in the Swarthout Valley area, although this has not been confirmed. Norovirus is known to spread through contaminated food or water, surfaces, and close contact.
The problem was discovered after hikers began reporting symptoms around May 8. Medical professionals confirmed the cases after hikers sought treatment in nearby towns. The outbreak highlights the challenges of maintaining hygiene and preventing the spread of illness in remote outdoor environments with limited sanitation facilities.
