Oceania Cruises' ship, Oceania Insignia, experienced a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its April 2026 voyage, affecting 19 passengers and 3 crew members. The outbreak, reported on April 13, involved symptoms predominantly of diarrhea, though the causative agent remains unknown. The ship sailed from April 7 to April 14 with 633 passengers and 394 crew members.The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on April 13, 2026. During the voyage, 3.0% of passengers and 0.8% of crew members reported illness. In response, Oceania Cruises implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated affected individuals, and collected stool specimens for testing. The VSP remotely monitored the situation, reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
The problem was discovered through reports of illness from passengers and crew to the ship's medical center. These reports allowed for quick detection and response to the outbreak. The medical staff evaluated symptoms to determine if they met the case definition for acute gastroenteritis, which includes three or more loose stools within 24 hours or vomiting with additional symptoms.
