Officials in Lerum, Sweden, have reported over 300 cases of suspected food poisoning linked to two Gobi Sushi restaurants in Floda and Lerum. The outbreak, which has led to the temporary closure of these establishments since April 21, is attributed to norovirus, though the exact source of the infection remains unidentified.The outbreak investigation is being conducted by the local environmental unit, the Swedish Food Agency, and Smittskydd Västra Götaland. Authorities are focusing on identifying the source of the norovirus by testing unopened food packages from the affected restaurants. Initial tests have found aerobic microorganisms and Enterobacteriaceae bacteria, indicating potential issues with storage and hygiene practices, though these findings are not directly linked to the illnesses.
The issue was discovered following numerous reports of illness from patrons who dined at the two sushi locations. Gobi Sushi has since issued a statement acknowledging a recent change in their fish supplier and outlining steps taken to improve food handling and hygiene practices. The restaurants have committed to enhancing their procedures to prevent future incidents.
