The Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Maine CDC) announced that a case of Hepatitis A was identified in a food service worker from Marco's Italian Restaurant located at 12 Mollison Way, Lewiston, ME. The virus, which is known to spread through person-to-person contact or consumption of contaminated food and water, may have potentially affected numerous patrons.The afflicted food service worker was employed and handling food at Marco's Italian Restaurant during their infectious period which spanned the following dates: September 11, 13, 15–16, 18, 20-22, 25, and 27-28, 2023. Owing to this exposure, patrons who purchased or consumed food or drink from the restaurant during these dates may potentially be at risk for Hepatitis A infection. An onset of symptoms can be expected within two weeks before or one week after contact with an infected person.
Everyone who has been in contact with this restaurant during the possible exposure period is advised to get a Hepatitis A vaccine if it has been within 14 days of exposure. If more than 14 days have passed, unvaccinated individuals are encouraged to get vaccinated to prevent future exposures. Moreover, leftover food from the establishment dated on the mentioned days should be discarded immediately. It is recommended to monitor for symptoms of Hepatitis A that include feeling tired, low or no appetite, stomach pain, nausea, diarrhoea, dark-coloured urine, jaundice, fever, joint pain etc.
