Nearly 100 teenagers at a holiday center in La Plagne, France, have fallen ill due to a norovirus outbreak. The incident has prompted an investigation by local authorities to determine the source and control the spread of the virus.Emergency services responded on March 31 to the Union des Centres Sportifs de Plein Air (UCPA) center, where approximately 89 individuals, primarily teenagers, exhibited symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. The Savoie prefecture reported that no hospitalizations were necessary. The outbreak, confirmed to be caused by norovirus, affected up to 97 children aged 11 to 13, with symptoms including fatigue, repeated vomiting, and dehydration.
The outbreak was discovered after multiple teenagers fell ill in quick succession, with some lying in corridors due to sudden symptoms. Emergency responders, including seven doctors, were dispatched to manage the situation. Initial tests ruled out food poisoning, and checks on water systems and ventilation returned reassuring results. Health authorities suspect the virus was introduced by a single individual before spreading rapidly. Precautionary measures, including isolating the sick, were implemented by the UCPA to curb the outbreak. The situation is reportedly improving, though a few new cases were still being reported as of April 1.
