Outbreak
Sweden
An outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium ST 36 has been reported in Sweden, with 81 cases identified across 18 regions from August to October. The pathogen has infected individuals of varying ages, with a majority being women. The outbreak has been linked to ten different genetically related bacterial variants of Salmonella Typhimurium ST 36. The cases are spread across a wide age range from 0 to 89 years, with a median age of 44 years. The majority of cases are found in the age groups 0-10 years (18 percent) and 40-50 years (22 percent). More women (63 percent) than men (37 percent) have been affected by the outbreak. The outbreak was initially investigated in September 2024, but no suspicious source could be identified at the time. The investigation has since been resumed and expanded as several new variants of ST 36 have been identified. Given the unusual nature of Salmonella Typhimurium ST 36 in Sweden and the simultaneous detection of different variants, it is believed that a common source of infection is responsible for the outbreak.
The investigation is being conducted in collaboration with the Public Health Agency, the Swedish Food Agency, relevant infection control bodies, and municipalities. International cooperation is also underway within EU networks to identify any potential spread of Salmonella Typhimurium ST 36 in other European countries. The investigation is focused on identifying any common foods consumed by the affected individuals prior to falling ill.
In case you are experiencing Salmonella symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
