E. coli Outbreak linked to Beef Kofta Served at The Kebab Shop Restaurant Chain

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is investigating an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) O157:H7 linked to beef kofta served at The Kebab Shop restaurant chain in Northern and Southern California. As of May 19, 2026, nine people have fallen ill, including six children, with five hospitalizations and two cases of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS).The outbreak has been traced back to grilled beef kofta, a seasoned ground beef kebab, served at The Kebab Shop. Illness onset dates range from March 27 to April 30, 2026. The Kebab Shop has voluntarily stopped selling grilled beef kofta at all its locations as a precautionary measure.
The problem was identified through interviews with affected individuals, which pointed to the grilled beef kofta as the likely source of infection. The Kebab Shop is cooperating with health officials, and the CDPH, along with local and federal partners, is continuing its investigation to determine the outbreak's cause and prevent further cases. The implicated beef product appears to have been distributed solely to The Kebab Shop.
