NZ Focuidan seaweed tonic - recalled due to potential health risks

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has issued a consumer warning for the seaweed tonic 'NZ Focuidan' due to potential health risks, there is the possibility for pathogens to be present in this tonic. The product has been made from seaweed without meeting registration requirements under the Food Act 2014. Available information suggests this product has been sold via informal sellers and local markets.New Zealand Food Safety (NZFS) has become aware of an unregulated seller of a seaweed tonic. Products using seaweed as an ingredient can be high in iodine. Without proper controls, treatments and dosage information, iodine can be dangerous, particularly to those with thyroid conditions. Seaweed can also bioaccumulate chemical hazards such as inorganic arsenic, lead, cadmium, and mercury. The product is believed to be fermented and the alcohol content is unknown.
The seaweed tonic, identifiable by the label 'NZ Focuidan', as well as unlabelled versions, come in various packaging sizes and weights across all batches. As identifying information may vary, consumers are advised to refer to product images for accurate identification.
The product has been sold with prohibited therapeutic claims and consumers should not be led by these claims.
