Nassau County Health Department Reports Hepatitis A Exposure at Local Sub Shop

8 months ago source nassaucountyny.gov business

24 Atlantic Avenue, Oceanside, 11572 New York, United States

The Nassau County Department of Health has confirmed a case of Hepatitis A in a food handler at Jersey Mike's Subs in Oceanside. Patrons who visited the establishment between April 5 and April 19, 2025, may have been exposed to the virus. The food handler was employed at the Jersey Mike's Subs located at 24 Atlantic Avenue. Customers who consumed food or drinks prepared on-site or used the restrooms during the specified period may be at risk. Although the risk of transmission is considered low, the health department advises individuals who may have been exposed to consult their healthcare provider.

The issue was discovered after the infected individual sought medical attention. Subsequent tests confirmed the presence of Hepatitis A, prompting the health department to issue this public warning. The department has established a call center to provide additional information to those who may have been exposed.

Hepatitis A is a viral liver disease that can cause mild to severe illness. It is transmitted through ingestion of contaminated food or water or through direct contact with an infectious person. The disease is rarely fatal, and most people recover within a few weeks without complications.

Postexposure treatment is available up to 14 days after exposure. Individuals who are within this window should consult with their healthcare provider and seek treatment as soon as possible. Those outside this window should monitor for symptoms of Hepatitis A and consult with their healthcare provider about the potential exposure and the need for vaccination for future protection. Individuals who have received two doses of the Hepatitis A vaccine or have had the illness in the past are protected and do not require further action.
