Since May 2025, a new variant of Cryptosporidium parvum, identified as IIzeta, has resulted in 12 reported cases in Denmark. The Statens Serum Institute (SSI), along with the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and the National Food Institute DTU, is actively investigating the outbreak, primarily affecting residents in Zealand. The outbreak involves 7 men and 5 women, aged between 20 and 60, with a median age of 31. While cases are spread across different regions, the majority are concentrated in the capital and Zealand. The geographical distribution of cases may be influenced by regional differences in testing activity and reporting. The Central Outbreak Group, comprising SSI and other national health bodies, is conducting patient interviews and sequencing samples to trace the infection source.
This particular strain of Cryptosporidium parvum was first detected in Denmark in May 2024, with 8 cases reported until March 2025. The pathogen is known to cause cryptosporidiosis, characterized by severe diarrhea and dehydration. The outbreak was identified through routine surveillance by SSI, which registered the cases and initiated an investigation to determine the infection's origin.
