Cyclospora infections in Northwest Georgia - Unknown source

2 years ago source nwgapublichealth.org

Georgia, United States

The Georgia Department of Public Health Northwest Health District is investigating reports of Cyclospora infection in Northwest Georgia. To date, they do not mention the source or how many people are infected. The public health officials say their investigation is ongoing and the number of cases is expected to increase.

Cyclospora is a parasite that can cause an illness resulting in prolonged gastrointestinal (gut) distress, including watery diarrhea with frequent, sometimes explosive, bowel movements that can last for weeks. In severe cases, Cyclospora infection can require hospitalization. Cyclosporiasis is not contagious, and there is no evidence it spreads from person to person.

Public health officials urge anyone with prolonged gastrointestinal symptoms to talk to their healthcare provider.

In case you are experiencing Cyclosporiasis symptoms, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
