Preston's Eldon Primary School has temporarily shut down its nursery due to several confirmed cases of Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) infections among its students. STEC is a potent strain of E. coli which precipitated the closure. The UK Health Security Agency is closely investigating the source of the infection and working consistently alongside the school. The outbreak traces back to multiple students within the school's nursery wing testing positive for the bacterial infection. Eldon Primary, in collaboration with the UK Health Security Agency, has since been conducting thorough health assessments for the involved cohorts and executing precautionary deep cleans of the school facilities. This is an immediate response to the rising rate of STEC infections, which can cause symptoms ranging from mild to severe diarrhea and abdominal pain, along with fevers in some cases. These symptoms can last up to two weeks, potentially leading to serious complications in a small percentage of patients.
