September 4th, 2025:
A new outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes has been reported, affecting 25 individuals across multiple states in the United States. The source of the outbreak, linked to an unidentified product, is currently under investigation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The outbreak, referenced as #1309, was added to the FDA's ongoing investigations table on September 4, 2025. Listeria monocytogenes is a bacterium that can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Symptoms of listeriosis can include fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues. The FDA has not yet identified the specific product responsible for the outbreak, and the investigation remains active.
The issue was discovered through routine surveillance and reporting of foodborne illnesses. Health officials began investigating after a cluster of listeriosis cases was reported. The FDA has initiated traceback, inspection, and sampling efforts to identify the source of contamination. The investigation is ongoing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
