Gastroenteritis Outbreak in P&O Cruise Ship

P&O Cruises is facing another outbreak, this time on its 3,200-passenger Ventura ship. Passengers have reported a gastroenteritis outbreak during a voyage off the coast of Northern France near the Channel Islands. The Ventura, a 116,017-gross-ton vessel, departed Southampton, England, on November 23, 2024, for a 12-night roundtrip voyage to the Canary Islands. Passengers on board claim the ship's crew advised them not to gather in large groups and to stay in their cabins if they felt ill. The crew reportedly attributed these precautions to an outbreak of gastroenteritis, a condition that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines.
The outbreak was discovered when a passenger leaked the news to an English media outlet, The Echo. The passenger reported that the crew had made an announcement about the outbreak, advising passengers to avoid large gatherings and to stay in their cabins if they felt unwell. The cause of gastroenteritis is often an infection from bacteria found in contaminated food or water.
This is not the first time P&O Cruises has faced such an issue. On November 15, 2024, 115 passengers filed a lawsuit against the cruise line, alleging negligence following multiple norovirus outbreaks aboard the Ventura earlier in the year. The plaintiffs claimed that inadequate sanitation measures contributed to the spread of the highly contagious virus, which affected hundreds of passengers over several sailings between April and June 2024.
If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enable better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
