In a recent incident, nearly 100 passengers and crew members aboard the Royal Caribbean International's Radiance of the Seas cruise ship fell ill due to a gastrointestinal outbreak. The pathogen responsible for the outbreak remains unknown. The outbreak occurred during the voyage from February 1 to February 8, 2025. Out of the 2,164 passengers onboard, 89 reported being ill, accounting for 4.1% of the total passenger count. Additionally, two out of 910 crew members, or 0.2%, also reported sickness. The predominant symptoms observed were diarrhea and vomiting. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on February 4, 2025.
The problem was discovered when passengers and crew members reported their symptoms to the medical center onboard. In response to the outbreak, Royal Caribbean International and the ship's crew increased cleaning and disinfection procedures as per their outbreak prevention and response plan. They also collected stool specimens from the ill for testing, isolated the sick passengers and crew, and consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases. The VSP is currently remotely monitoring the situation, including a review of the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures. The causative agent of the outbreak is still under investigation, with samples pending confirmatory testing.
If you or a loved one are harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
