Gastrointestinal Outbreak on National Geographic Sea Lion Cruise Ship

In a recent incident, Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Sea Lion cruise ship reported a gastrointestinal outbreak. The pathogen remains unidentified, with 5 passengers and 2 crew members falling ill during the voyage from April 15 to April 29, 2025. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on April 21, 2025. The affected individuals, constituting 11.6% of the passengers and 5.4% of the crew, exhibited predominant symptoms of vomiting, fever, and diarrhea. The voyage, numbered SL 22512, was closely monitored by the VSP.The outbreak was discovered when passengers and crew reported their symptoms to the onboard medical center. This early detection allowed for immediate steps to be taken to limit the spread of the illness. In response, Lindblad Expeditions increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan. The ill passengers and crew were isolated, and the VSP was consulted about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases.
Despite these measures, the causative agent remains unknown as those who met the case definition did not provide stool or vomitus samples. The investigation is ongoing, with the VSP continuing to remotely monitor the situation and review the ship’s outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
