Seabourn Cruise Line's ship, the Seabourn Encore, has experienced a gastrointestinal outbreak, affecting 35 people on board. The causative agent has been identified as norovirus, with passengers and crew members reporting symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps. The outbreak occurred during the voyage from March 16, 2025, to April 9, 2025. Out of the total number of passengers onboard, 13 out of 461 (2.8%) reported being ill. The crew was more significantly affected, with 22 out of 405 (5.4%) reporting illness. The outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on March 21, 2025.The problem was discovered when passengers and crew members began reporting their symptoms to the medical center onboard. This early reporting allowed for quick detection of the outbreak, enabling steps to be taken to limit the spread of the illness. In response, Seabourn Cruise Line increased cleaning and disinfection procedures according to their outbreak prevention and response plan. They also collected stool specimens from those affected for testing, isolated ill passengers and crew, and consulted with VSP about sanitation cleaning procedures and reporting ill cases. The VSP has been remotely monitoring the situation, including reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.
If you or a loved one is harmed or experiencing any symptoms, it is important to report it. Reporting can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
