Alberta Health Services (AHS) has confirmed a case of hepatitis A in a food handler at Meltwich Kensington, a sandwich shop in Calgary. The individual was infectious while preparing food, potentially exposing customers to the virus. The exposure risk applies to individuals who consumed food or drink from the restaurant between February 2 and February 19, 2025. AHS has warned that these customers may have been exposed to hepatitis A, a virus that infects the liver and is primarily spread through the fecal-oral route.
The case was discovered after the infected individual sought medical attention. AHS was alerted and subsequently conducted an investigation at the restaurant. The health agency is now working to prevent further spread of the virus by offering post-exposure immunization to eligible individuals. Those who consumed food or drink at the restaurant from February 6 to February 19, 2025, may be eligible for this immunization. However, individuals who ate at the restaurant from February 2 to February 5, 2025, are no longer eligible for post-exposure immunization and should monitor for symptoms.
Hepatitis A is a serious health concern, but with prompt action and awareness, the risk of further spread can be minimized. AHS continues to provide healthcare services to over four million adults and children in Alberta, with a focus on reducing emergency department wait times, improving EMS response times, increasing access to surgeries, and improving patient flow.
