Hepatitis A exposure risk at Earls Kitchen + Bar

6 months ago source toronto.ca business

601 King Street West, Toronto, M5V 1M5 Ontario, Canada

Toronto Public Health (TPH) has confirmed a case of Hepatitis A in an employee at Earls Kitchen + Bar, located at 601 King St. W. The outbreak has led to potential exposure for diners, with TPH urging those affected to seek vaccination. There is no ongoing risk to the public.

Exposures may have occurred on the following dates and times:

Friday, July 11: 4 p.m. to close
Saturday, July 12: 4:30 p.m. to close
Tuesday, July 15: 4:30 p.m. to close
Wednesday, July 16: 7 p.m. to close

Hepatitis A is a virus transmitted through the fecal-oral route, often via contaminated food handled by infected individuals. The potential exposure dates at the restaurant include July 11, 12, 15, and 16 during evening hours. Symptoms of Hepatitis A can appear 15 to 50 days post-infection and range from mild to severe, including fever, nausea, and jaundice. While most recover fully, older adults and those with chronic liver conditions face higher risks of severe illness.

The issue was identified following a confirmed diagnosis of Hepatitis A in a restaurant employee. In response, TPH is conducting free vaccination clinics at Metro Hall to mitigate the risk of further infections. The clinics aim to provide timely vaccinations, which are most effective within 14 days of exposure, to those who may have dined at the restaurant during the specified dates.
