Hepatitis Outbreak Linked to Suspected Contaminated Food Item - Investigation Underway

8 months ago source mirror.co.uk

United Kingdom

A hepatitis outbreak linked to a supermarket item has resulted in 58 hospitalizations in the UK. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is investigating the outbreak, which has affected a total of 95 individuals. Two clusters of the virus have been identified, with the source suspected to be a food item from an unnamed supermarket.

The outbreak has been ongoing, with the first cluster of cases identified between January 2021 and March 2025, affecting 19 individuals aged 50 to 69. The second cluster began in January 2023, leading to 39 additional hospitalizations, with cases still being reported as of March 2025. No fatalities have been reported, and Public Health Scotland is collaborating with the UKHSA to trace the outbreak's origins.

The investigation began after interviews with affected individuals suggested a link to a specific supermarket item frequently consumed by those infected. Despite concerns, the product has not been publicly named. Authorities are working to confirm the source and prevent further cases.
