Increase of Norovirus cases in Ottawa County, MI

3 years ago source content.govdelivery.com

Outbreak

Michigan, United States

The Ottawa Department of Public Health announced that Norovirus-like illness (stomach bug) is circulating in the community and is increasing.

It spreads very easily and quickly from person to person by touching surfaces contaminated with vomit or stool. A member of the Public Health Department said that they are seeing increases in emergency department visits for stomach virus-like complaints. Schools, childcare settings and physician offices are also reporting more stomach illness in the past few weeks. Outbreaks are occurring in nursing homes and other long-term care settings.

In order to prevent Norovirus:
- Wash hands with soap and water, especially after using the toilet and changing diapers, and always before eating or preparing food.
- Clean and disinfect contaminated surfaces (such as toilets, counters, and doorknobs).
- Wash laundry thoroughly.
- Stay home if sick for at least 24 hours after symptoms end to avoid spreading the illness to others.

Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

In case you are experiencing symptoms like diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance.
