Listeriosis Outbreak Under Investigation

3 months ago source fsai.ie

Ireland

A national outbreak of listeriosis linked to ready-to-heat meals is under investigation, with nine confirmed cases reported as of July 22, 2025. The Health Service Executive (HSE) Health Protection Surveillance Centre is involved, and a precautionary recall of the implicated products is in progress. The outbreak has resulted in one adult death, with details withheld for confidentiality.

The National Outbreak Control Team, chaired by the HSE National Health Protection Office, is leading the investigation. This team includes the HSE National Environmental Health Service, HSE Regional Public Health Services, the Food Safety Authority of Ireland, the National Salmonella, Shigella and Listeria Reference Laboratory, and the National Reference Laboratory of the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. The investigation aims to identify the source of contamination and prevent further cases.

The outbreak was discovered following reports of illness among consumers who had consumed the affected ready-to-heat meals. The HSE Health Protection Surveillance Centre was notified, prompting an immediate investigation. Laboratory testing confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, leading to the recall and ongoing efforts to trace the contamination source. The investigation is still active, with updates expected as more

In case you are experiencing Listeria monocytogenes symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, it is important to report it. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
