Wausau, Wisconsin, United States
The Marathon County Health Department has reported high levels of norovirus in the greater Wausau area's wastewater. The data from Wastewater Scan indicates that the norovirus concentration is among the highest in the country. The levels of norovirus, a highly contagious pathogen, have been steadily increasing since mid-December. Norovirus can cause symptoms such as diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, and stomach pain. It is critical for people to maintain good hygiene practices, including thorough hand washing and sanitizing frequently touched surfaces, to prevent the spread of the virus.
The high norovirus levels were discovered through a collaboration with the Wausau Waterworks Treatment Facility. The Marathon County Health Department is working to investigate the cause of this outbreak and protect the public.
