Norovirus Outbreak Affects Passengers on Serenade of the Seas

3 months ago source cdc.gov business

1140 North Harbor Drive, San Diego, 92101 California, United States

A norovirus outbreak on Royal Caribbean International's Serenade of the Seas has sickened 71 passengers and one crew member during a cruise from September 19 to October 2, 2025. The outbreak, reported on September 28, affected 3.79% of the 1,874 passengers and 0.11% of the 883 crew members onboard.

The outbreak was characterized by symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. In response, Royal Caribbean International implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated affected individuals, and collected stool specimens for testing. The cruise line also consulted with the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) to ensure proper sanitation and reporting protocols were followed.

The issue was discovered when passengers and crew began reporting symptoms to the onboard medical center, allowing for quick detection and response. The VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures to prevent further spread of the illness.
