Norovirus Outbreak Confirmed in Walla Walla County

11 months ago source nbcrightnow.com

Washington, United States

Walla Walla Department of Community Health (WWCDCH) has confirmed multiple cases of norovirus in a long-term care facility. The outbreak, caused by the highly contagious influenza virus, has resulted in several residents falling ill.

The outbreak was discovered when multiple residents of the long-term care facility began exhibiting symptoms of the virus. The WWCDCH was alerted and subsequent testing confirmed the presence of norovirus. In response to the outbreak, the WWCDCH is advising residents to take preventative measures such as washing hands with soap and water, cleaning contaminated surfaces with bleach, handling food safely, washing laundry thoroughly, and wearing protective gear like masks and gloves when in close proximity to sick individuals.

The department continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as necessary.

Norovirus - Norovirus is very contagious and is easily transmitted from person to person most through the oral/fecal route. Considering that hand sanitizer does NOT work against this virus, it is important to wash your hands with soap frequently. Use bleach to clean and disinfect surfaces.

In case you experience Norovirus symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, and nausea, report it now. It can help to detect & resolve outbreaks early and prevent others from being harmed, and it enables better surveillance. If symptoms persist, seek medical care.
