Norovirus Outbreak in AIDAdiva Cruise

1 month ago source cdc.gov business

7 Überseeboulevard, Hamburg, 20457 Hamburg, Germany

A gastrointestinal illness outbreak has been reported on the Aida Cruises ship AIDAdiva, affecting 95 passengers and 6 crew members with norovirus symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting. The outbreak occurred during the voyage from November 10 to December 16, 2025, with the situation reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on November 30, 2025.

The outbreak affected 4.8% of the 2,007 passengers and 0.9% of the 640 crew members onboard. Norovirus, a highly contagious virus known for causing gastrointestinal distress, was identified as the causative agent. In response, Aida Cruises implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, collected stool specimens for testing, and isolated affected individuals. The cruise line also consulted with VSP to ensure proper sanitation and reporting protocols were followed.

The issue was discovered after passengers and crew reported symptoms to the ship's medical center, prompting an investigation. The VSP is remotely monitoring the situation, reviewing the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures to prevent further spread. This incident underscores the importance of prompt reporting and adherence to health protocols to manage and contain outbreaks effectively.
