Norovirus Outbreak in Caribbean Princess Cruise

1 day ago source cdc.gov

1801 Southeast 20th Street, Fort Lauderdale, 33316 Florida, United States

Princess Cruises' Caribbean Princess has experienced a norovirus outbreak, affecting 115 individuals, including 102 passengers and 13 crew members, during its voyage from April 28 to May 11, 2026. The outbreak was reported on May 7, 2026, with cases primarily located on the ship, which was sailing in the Caribbean.

The outbreak involved symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting, attributed to the norovirus. The affected individuals represent 3.3% of the 3,116 passengers and 1.2% of the 1,131 crew members on board. In response, Princess Cruises implemented enhanced cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated those who were ill, and collected stool specimens for testing. The Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) is conducting an environmental assessment and outbreak investigation to assist in controlling the situation.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported symptoms to the onboard medical center, enabling quick detection of the outbreak. This prompt reporting allowed for immediate action to limit the spread of the illness. The VSP was consulted to ensure proper sanitation and reporting protocols were followed.
