Norovirus Outbreak in Celebrity Eclipse Cruise

2 weeks ago source cdc.gov business

2025 Eller Drive, Fort Lauderdale, 33316 Florida, United States

Celebrity Cruises' ship, Celebrity Eclipse, experienced a gastrointestinal illness outbreak during its December 20-28, 2025 voyage. The outbreak affected 95 passengers and 9 crew members, with predominant symptoms including vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. The causative agent remains unknown, and the outbreak was reported to the Vessel Sanitation Program (VSP) on December 28, 2025.

The outbreak occurred on voyage number 64546, which had 3,042 passengers and 1,235 crew members onboard. The illness affected 3.1% of passengers and 0.7% of the crew. In response, Celebrity Cruises implemented increased cleaning and disinfection procedures, isolated ill individuals, and collected stool specimens for testing. The VSP remotely monitored the situation and reviewed the ship's outbreak response and sanitation procedures.

The problem was discovered when passengers and crew reported their symptoms to the onboard medical center, which allowed for quick detection of the outbreak. The VSP was notified after the voyage concluded, which limited the availability of samples for testing to determine the causative agent. The investigation into the outbreak is ongoing, with efforts focused on identifying the source of the illness.
