Chania, Greece
In a recent outbreak in Chania, 67 people, including 23 engineering students, have been hospitalised due to a norovirus infection causing viral gastroenteritis. The highly contagious norovirus has led to a significant increase in emergency room visits at Chania General Hospital. Patients have been presenting symptoms of severe vomiting and diarrhea. Matina Pagoni, president of the Pan Hellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers, stated that the viral gastroenteritis is not bacterial and typically lasts about three days. She stressed the importance of hydration over special medication. The number of cases, initially at 43, escalated to 67 by Tuesday night. Hospital governor George Beas has confirmed that protective measures have been put in place, including limiting hospital visits until October 18. The Public Health Directorate of Crete is collaborating with the hospital to trace the source of the infection, as cases have been reported from various regions of Chania. While several patients have been discharged, others continue to receive treatment.
